Pinezanita (Julian, CA)

After a few months off from camping it was good to head out again. We chose Pinezanita which is up in the mountains in the Cleveland National Forest. We were up in this area in February 2018 on our second trip in the trailer, we really liked the area and decided to come back.

We arrived Thursday afternoon and had a really nice spot that was level, wide and backed up to wilderness, it was beautiful. We explored the campground and settled on tacos for dinner. I didn’t get the freezer latched tight before leaving home and the hamburger was on the floor defrosted when we arrived (oops!)

The entire area was lush and green, with all the rain and snow this winter, the down side is that the pollen levels were off the chart!

On Friday we took a drive into Julian where we shopped a little. We bought some boysenberry/apple juice which I later mixed with vodka, it was pretty good, but a little sweet so I think it would be good to add some soda or tonic. We’ll experiment later. While in Julian we found an old gold mine, took a tour and panned for gold. However the panning was “catch and release”. Guess we’ll have to look to make our fortune somewhere else!

When we returned to camp the guy parked next to us was in our campsite looking at our trailer, turns out he was trying to figure out what our toy lock was. Jim sat down and we visited for a while until his wife Susie came looking for him. They were camping with their church group and she’d been to every RV looking for him. She joined us and we visited for a bit longer. Nice couple from La Jolla. We grilled burgers for dinner and a movie finished out the day.

Saturday was a day of pure relaxation! We took a couple of walks, read, snoozed, played a little Yahtzee and cooked dinner. Truly a great day.

I really think the Breezy Elks would have e great time here, Tom’s going to suggest it.

I usually end my posts when we leave the campsite, but this time we had a little excitement on the way home. After winding through mountain roads for a while we stopped at the La Jolla Indian Reservation for fuel, as we were leaving a couple of guys on motorcycles pointed to our trailer just as we heard a strange noise. Turns out our anti sway bar broke and was dragging. Tom removed it and we continued…slowly. There was no wind so we made it home fine. Breaking down is my worst RV fear, and I have been told by far more experienced RVers than I am that it’s not so much if but when and you break down, you really have to just roll with it! I have also learned that most people are decent and helpful.

All in all this was a great trip and we’ll be back to Pinezanita.
