Mammoth Lakes

This weekend we went to Mammoth and stayed at an RV campground about 11 miles from downtown Mammoth. McGee campground was for the most part lovely. We booked late and so our campsite wasn’t tucked back in the trees like many of the others and it was tiny, we only had half a picnic table! We’ll absolutely stay here again…and book earlier!

The first order of business after unhooking the trailer was to head into Mammoth to Roberto’s Mexican Restaurant for nachos and margaritas. The last time we were in Mammoth (13 years ago) we decided they were the best nachos we had ever eaten and never found any that compare. With that standard we were a little hesitant that we’d built them up too much. But it had been a rough drive with Tom not getting a good nights sleep on Wednesday and then heading out early Thursday. That long stretch on Hwy 395 almost did him in, so off to Roberto’s we went. We were not disappointed and a plate of nachos and three margaritas later we came back to camp and took a nap! So what did we learn from this? 1. Drink beer not margaritas at 3:00 in the afternoon 2. The nachos were still DELICIOUS and 3. This is why I love having my own “home” when we travel, such a nice place to come back to!

Friday we had a light breakfast and took a long walk around the area, ended up at a little coffee shop/bakery for a cup of coffee (milk for Tom) and a bit of coffee cake. The creek was rushing so fast it was pretty amazing – and beautiful! Just down the road was a camping/motel called Tom’s Place, so we checked it out. I remember going there 13 years ago, but Tom did not. We scouted out some additional RV parks and found a BLM place between Tom’s Place and our campground. It would be great for an overnight stay on our way through. Lunch at Roberto’s, sans Margaritas and back to camp for a bit.

Saturday morning I felt that awful twinge in my back and knew it wasn’t good. We drove into Mammoth, got a back brace and some Advil and it felt somewhat better. We drove up to Mammoth ski resort and we were amazed at the number of skiers/snowboarders there were. The mountain is scheduled to be open through July for skiing. We then drove to June lake for lunch but decided hiking wasn’t a good idea this trip. A couple of rounds of Yahtzee was fun though. We cooked spaghetti for dinner as the campsite was too small to get the bbq out.

Sunday we were up early, packed up and had an issue with a leaky sewer hose. Never good, but particularly bad with the sites so close together. Anyway we were on the road by 8:30 grassing home. We’ve decided that at this point I’m practicing for retirement and I’m getting pretty good at it!
