Borrego Springs

On January 9th we took off for Borrego Springs. I had a vague idea where it was, however, in my defense, it is truly some place we can’t get to from home! Once we got there I truly understood why it is designated a “dark sky” area. If you are away from the RV park, it is truly in the middle of nowhere!

After checking in we were offered a host to show us to our spot, since it was the first time we had visited we accepted. Larry and his wife stay at the RV Resort during the winter and for a reduced fee, act as camp hosts and work three six-hour shifts per week. There are quite a number of hosts and they are all fabulous! This is truly the fanciest RV Resort we have ever stayed at, the gravel area between sites is raked after each guest leaves and the rake designs into the gravel. I really was aftaid to step on it, I didn’t want to mess it up! There is an 18-hole golf course attached and it was perfectly manicured. Along with a pool and jacuzzies this place was truly exceptional.

We took it easy Thursday and spent some time walking around the park. It is quite large and we met some wonderful people from San Diego. Of course, we stopped and had a cocktail with them before going home to cook dinner!

Friday, I wanted to see the sculptures that I had read dotted the desert around Borrego Springs, but when I Googled it the directions said it was 2 hours away. We really didn’t want to drive 2 hours so we took a drive into the little town and did some shopping. While buying a top at a little store I was telling the clerk how disappointed I was and she looked at me like I was a complete nut! The sculptures are actually about 2 miles from the little town of Borrego Springs, however, the artist’s studio in in Anza-Borrego…2 hours away! Since it was getting a little late on Saturday, we returned to camp, took a bike ride and decided to check them out on Saturday.

We were not disappointed, the sculptures were fabulous, and we had a great time locating them and walking around them. Of course, it was Saturday, so there were a lot of people (well, a lot for Borrego Springs), but we met some nice folks from British Columbia and had a really great time.

The best part of biking around Borrego Springs is that it is absolutely flat! Being old, I really enjoy not having to work too hard!

Saturday night we discovered we were almost out of propane, since we couldn’t get it refilled until the morning, and we wanted to make sure we had some in the morning, we slept with the heat off! It gets really cold in Borrego Springs at night! The inside of the trailer was in the 50s when we woke up. Luckily we had enough propane to heat the trailer and cook breakfast. The campground was so fancy, we just had to leave the empty tanks by our campsite, labeled with our site number and one of the hosts picks it up, gets it filled, charges it to the credit card on file and returns it to us! So easy.

This was a great trip and I would really like to come again. We were unable to see too many stars because there was a full moon! That of course was my number one reason to come to this area! Oh well, next month were off to Joshua Tree, so we should see lots of start there!
