So, with the whole COVID-19 lock-down, camping has been a struggle. We were last out in February. Our March, April, and May trips were cancelled. In June we couldn’t take it any longer and booked a trip to Rancho Oso, which is between Lake Catchuma and Solvang. We were here in 2018 and really enjoyed it.
We left on Saturday June 27 and stayed until Tuesday, June 30. On the way to Rancho Oso we went through Camarillo and met Dave and Nancy for lunch. We haven’t seen extended family since Christmas so it was really nice to catch up face-to-face.
COVID-19 has made RV life a little interesting! We were a bit amazed that when we arrived, all the hook-up sites were full and we had to find a spot in the overflow. We had electric and water, but no sewer. Actually, the sites were much nicer, situated under trees and not just lined up, but I had to work hard to not put too much water down the drain with our small tanks. It’s times like this that I start thinking of a different rig!
Last time we were here we learned that WiFi and cell service are spotty at best. Once we were settled I attempted to text the kids that we had made it safely. We drove around the campground but could not find service and eventually gave up!
Of course we noticed the moon was up by late afternoon, so took a picture for Peyton! We made friends with our neighbors, cooked dinner and enjoyed the evening around the gas campfire. Only Sunday, did I realize the mosquitoes had eaten me alive!
Sunday was quiet and we took a long walk through the paths, the campground was practicing “social distancing” and only one family was allowed at the pool at one time and for only 40 minutes. This is a pool area with 2 large pools and lots of decks, however, we went and signed up for a 12:40 to 1:20 p.m. pool time. The world we are living in is a strange one right now! During our walk Tom’s phone began ringing, we are in the middle of nowhere, looking for the river that is supposed to run through the area. Chad was calling to make sure we were OK! Apparently he got worried about us last night and Brigette and him called the campsite to make sure we had checked in. He is such is mother’s child! My phone still had no service at all, but Tom chatted for a bit with Chad and apologized for not being able to contact them.
Monday we took a short trip to Solvang, but with all the mask-wearing and social distancing, we did not stay long. Since restaurants were open we went to Anderson’s for pea soup and a sandwich. Tom had never been and I hadn’t been since Kristin and I went up there 20 years ago. The soup was great and it was nice to be able to go out to eat.
We packed up Tuesday morning and headed home. I can almost make myself believe things are “normal” again, even though I know they aren’t.
