We left home on Thursday, February 24th and headed to Joshua Tree Lake. The weather was not ideal, cold and windy on Wednesday and still quite chilly on Thursday when we arrived. The high temperature that day was 50 degrees and it dipped down into the 30s at night. When we were in the sun it was pleasant enough with a jacket on, but in the shade it was pretty cold. Nonetheless, we were out for an adventure, so we put on warm clothing and had a great time. We recently learned that we could use an electric heater in the main portion of the trailer and keep us warm at night. Since it doesn’t use propane, we save on that as well!
We had planned to go hiking in Joshua Tree National Park on Friday, but I was not feeling well, so we just hung around camp. By afternoon I was feeling better and we took a drive to Pioneer Town, which is about a 30 minute away in Yucca. Pioneer Town was a movie lot with lots of old west buildings. It was created in 1946 with dreams of creating a living movie set – and 1870s frontier town with facades for filming and interiors open to he public. Now although it is just a tourist stop, they still host music concerts. We should have gone before lunch as there were some cute places to eat. I should probably note that between our last time out (Tucalota Springs) and now Tom had Covid and hurt his hip/back and I was just getting over a cold, hence my not feeling too good on Friday.
Saturday was a little warmer with a strong breeze, but we went to Joshua Tree National Park anyway. I guess a lot of people had the same idea and we were unable to park and hike at the location we wanted to. We drover further into the park and hiked a couple of smaller trails, but it was great to just get out in nature again! We ended up at the exit of the park in Twenty-Nine Palms and had originally planned on meeting up with some friends who are staying there for the winter, but as luck would have it they were out of town! We found a cute little Mexican food restaurant and had a couple of margaritas and a great linner (lunch/dinner).
I forgot to get my National Park Stamp for my book of National Parks and monuments, so on Sunday we went back to the visitor center so I could get my stamps. I have a National Parks Passport book which shows all parks and monuments in each state. There are so many that I never realized existed and it’s fun to get a stamp at each one we visit. It really feels like an “old person” thing to do, but hey, when in Rome….
Other than that, the trip was pretty uneventful, however having our bikes with us would have been fun. We are still waiting for our e-bike rack that was ordered in August 2021. I’m beginning to lose hope that we’ll be taking our bikes on our big Mid-West trip in April!
