After leaving Denison Texas on Monday, Aril 25, 2022 we had three back-to-back travel days. These are tough days as we spend 5-6 hours in the truck. We stop to stretch and take a bathroom break, but other than that we stay on the road.
While driving to Tulsa, we realized we were on a toll road, but that was the only option our GPS gave us. At one point we were directed to exit the highway to the toll booth. When we did it was unmanned and required us to deposit $1.75 in coin only. After looking in every conceivable place in the truck, my purse, and my bag I always carry with miscellaneous items, we came up with $1.75 in quarters. After depositing the coins, and going through the toll booth, the GPS advised us to make a U-turn and go back through the toll booth again! Since we were out of change, we pulled over to the shoulder and went into the trailer where Tom keeps spare change next to his side of the bed. We now had plenty and when we went through the toll booth there was a young man cleaning it. We asked him about the U-turn, and he said “Yeah, GPS always takes people this way, if you’d stayed on the Interstate another 1/4 mile there is a manned toll booth with an attendant who will give change”. At least we had more change, if necessary! We arrived in Tulsa about 2:00 p.m. and tried out the new tongue jack. It worked perfectly. We were tired and wanted to get an early start to Kansas, so I cooked dinner, we watched a movie an went to bed.
We left Tulsa about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and arrived in Lawrence, KS around 1:30. The Kansas Turnpike also is a toll road, but this time we were prepared! We stayed at a KOA, and they mentioned they had change, if we needed it. We bought $20 worth of quarters, just to be safe! After unhooking the trailer, we took a walk around the campground and looked at dinner options. Years ago, in the 1980s Tom was on a business trip to Kansas City and had the best steak he had ever tasted. We were about 35 miles from Kansas City, but since he didn’t remember the name of the restaurant, we decided to just find a restaurant in Lawrence. We basically had three options for dinner, one was a steakhouse that seemed WAY overpriced, one touted that the put a red wine glaze on all their steaks (that wasn’t going to work) so we chose Texas Roadhouse, which is a chain, and not really where we thought we wanted to eat. Well, for $20 each we got a delicious steak and two sides We were pleasantly surprised as the steaks were great as were the sides and everything was priced right!
We turned in early as we had a long drive to Iowa. We are both excited to see our cousins, for Tom it’s only been about four years, but for me I haven’t seen Lynn or David for over 20 years!
I know there aren’t many photos this time, but I forgot to take dinner photos or ones of our campsite!
