Albuquerque to Amarillo

As exciting as our trip to Albuquerque was, our trip to Amarillo was uneventful! We stopped overnight in Amarillo on April 20, 2022, one thing we found was that Texas has a unique (for us) way for giving addresses. The RV Park we stayed at was off I-40 on a frontage road, and although the truck’s GPS was like Nope! that doesn’t exist, Mr. Google Maps was a little more accommodating, and we pulled into a very cute RV Park with such a friendly owner. We set up camp and unhooked the trailer for the first time since Show Low. Tom did have to hand crank the tongue jack, and although he doesn’t want to do that every night for the next 5 weeks, he said it wasn’t that bad. We will look to get the electricity hooked up to the tongue jack when we are in Denison, TX for a few days. One thing I found interesting on the drive through Texas, is that they also have the big windmills like we see near Palm Springs. I guess I thought that was just a “California thing”.

We follow a YouTube channel “Keep your Daydream” and when they followed Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica they stopped in Amarillo and ate dinner at a restaurant named The Big Texan Steak Ranch. This restaurant advertises a “free” 72 oz. steak, but of course there is a catch. You must agree to join the contest, sit on a platform so everyone can watch and oh yeah eat a 72 oz. steak, baked potato, 3 fried shrimp, and a roll with butter in 60 minutes. If you are successful, the meal is free, if not they charge you $79! We did not join the contest, but we were seated right near the platform so we could watch. The steaks were good AND they serve their drinks as doubles so that was fun.

In many Mexican restaurants you will find roaming Mariachi singers, this one had roaming country singers, so what else would I request when they came by but “Amarillo by Morning” by George Strait! It seemed a little corny to request that song, yet when in Amarillo….

We returned to the RV for a good night’s sleep and headed to Denison in the morning to visit my life-long friend Debi Humphries and her husband Terry, who just retired to Texas last year.
